External drives get carried around, knocked off desks and unplugged mid-copy, so they fail more often than internal ones. We recover data from every brand of external hard drive and portable SSD.
Drives we recover
- WD My Passport, My Book, Elements and Easystore
- Seagate Backup Plus, Expansion, One Touch and FireCuda Gaming
- LaCie Rugged, d2 and Porsche Design
- Toshiba Canvio
- G-Technology and other drives used for video and photo work
- Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme and other portable SSDs
Common problems
- Drive not recognized, or Windows asks to format it
- Clicking or beeping after a drop
- Broken USB connector
- Drive shows as “RAW” or with no files
- Hardware-encrypted WD drives where the USB board has failed
Many WD drives have the USB connection built into the drive’s own circuit board, and some encrypt the data with that board. We handle those as a board repair rather than simply moving the drive into a new case. Don’t try to take the drive out of its enclosure yourself.
How it works
Book online or call, and we collect the drive or you ship it to us. An engineer evaluates it, tells you what can be recovered and gives you a fixed quote. Recovery only starts when you approve it, and we work from a copy of the drive, never your only original.
Questions we get asked
Windows says the drive needs to be formatted. Should I?
No. Click Cancel. Formatting can overwrite the information needed to rebuild your folders. Unplug the drive and contact us.
